How it works

This was a 12-month wellness initiative designed to help Islanders make a lifestyle change to be more physically active. Households and workplaces from across PEI took part in the initiative to encourage more movement in their home or workplace.

The program included

  • Initial assessments of health and fitness level

  • A personalized walking program based on your current fitness level

  • Weekly group walks with other program participants

  • Wellness education sessions

  • Introductions to local facilities and programs

  • Weekly prompts and encouragement

The program was for adults who were not meeting the recommended physical activity guidelines of 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity a week. Because there was a research component to this initiative, only adults could officially be part of the program. However, all members of the household were encouraged to attend the various sessions.

Participants commited to participate for one year with the following duties

  • Participate in initial and follow up assessments

  • Submit the bi-weekly rating of commitment

  • Wear a pedometer which uploads information to the Log Your Steps website

  • Attend as many of the community activities and public outings as possible.

The program was delivered in communities across PEI by the go!PEI community partners: Eastern Region Sport & Rec Council, Central Region Sport & Rec Council, Western Regional Sport & Rec Council, the cities of Charlottetown and Summerside, and the towns of Stratford and Cornwall.
